What Is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a collagen-stimulating treatment that uses PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic Acid). It induces collagen production through the tissue response that occurs after injection, and changes in wrinkles and volume are observed as time passes.
It is used to improve facial wrinkles in adults, and changes appear as collagen is produced. Immediately after the procedure, swelling and the effect of the injected solution may also be visible.
What Are the Characteristics of Sculptra?
Gradual Change Through PLLA
Its characteristic feature is inducing collagen production to supplement volume and improve wrinkles. Rather than completing the shape in a single session, the treatment is planned while checking the response of the skin and tissue.
The Difference Between the Initial Appearance and Later Progress
Immediately after injection, the area may appear swollen due to the solution used for reconstitution together with the swelling itself. This appearance settling down should not immediately be taken to mean the treatment had no effect, nor should additional treatment be decided based on the appearance right after the procedure alone.
A Treatment Plan That Tracks Progress
The extent of volume loss, skin thickness, and prior treatment history are checked, and the number of sessions needed is planned. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, it cannot be reversed in the same way using a dissolving enzyme, so it is important to avoid over-correction from the start and to observe the response.
Who Is It Suitable For?
- Those whose face looks more gaunt than before, with wrinkles also of concern
- Those who want to gradually supplement volume over a wide area
- Those who prefer a natural change that appears gradually over time rather than an immediate change
- Those who want to manage both facial volume and skin condition after weight loss
What to Check Before the Procedure
It is not used in thin, highly mobile areas such as the lips or under the eyes. Please inform us of any inflammation or infection at the treatment site, autoimmune disease, history of keloids, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If a clearly defined shape change is needed within a short period, another treatment may be more suitable.
How Is It Different From Hyaluronic Acid Fillers and Radiesse?
Hyaluronic acid fillers fill space with a gel to supplement volume and shape. Sculptra produces gradual change as the skin responds to PLLA and generates collagen.
Radiesse consists of CaHA microspheres and the gel that carries them. The treatment plan differs depending on the purpose—such as volume supplementation or elasticity management—and the dilution method used. The choice is made by considering the desired speed and extent of change together with skin condition.
How Are the Effects and Repeat Treatments Planned?
Immediately after the procedure, the area may appear swollen due to the reconstitution solution and swelling. Rather than judging the result based on the initial appearance alone, changes in wrinkles and volume from the subsequent collagen response are observed.
Sculptra is generally planned as around 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, though this may range from 1–4 sessions depending on skin condition. The skin’s response and the change you’re aiming for are checked at each session to determine the next treatment.
Recovery and Precautions
Swelling, bruising, tenderness, or redness may occur, and papules, nodules, or an inflammatory reaction may develop at a later stage. Please follow the massage method and duration you are instructed to use. Massage does not prevent all nodules.
Please inform the clinic if you feel a newly formed firm lump, or if redness, warmth, or pain occurs. If severe pain, a change in skin color, or a visual disturbance occurs, you must receive an immediate medical evaluation.
How WayB Approaches This
- We assess volume loss, skin condition, and your desired change to plan injection sites and treatment. We then monitor the collagen response and volume changes to decide whether further treatment is needed.
- We do not use it in areas with a high risk of nodules, such as the lips or under the eyes.
- We provide written massage instructions, including the duration, and proceed only after you understand them.
